Este el resultado de implementar Lean en el servicio postal de EEUU, se anima alguien a sugerirlo a nuestro gobierno:

Green Teams Help Postal Service Save Millions

Savings and Revenue Surpass $27 Million
WASHINGTON — Lean Green Teams helped the Postal Service reduce energy, water, solid waste to landfills and petroleum fuel use, saving the agency more than $5 million in 2010. They also helped the Postal Service recycle more than 222,000 tons of material — an increase of nearly 8,000 tons over the prior year — which generated $13 million in revenue, and saved an additional $9.1 million in landfill fees.

“Across the country, postal employees are participating in more than 80 cross-functional Lean Green Teams that are producing significant results in energy reduction and resource conservation,” said Emil Dzuray, acting Chief Sustainability Officer.

Lean Green Teams build on the Postal Service’s efforts to create a culture of conservation and on its long history of environmental and socially responsible leadership. The teams are helping mesh low-cost and no-cost sustainable practices with performance management systems to help the Postal Service meet the following reduction goals by 2015:

•facility energy use 30 percent
•water use 10 percent
•petroleum fuel use 20 percent
•landfill waste 50 percent.
The Postal Service is on track to achieve these goals, according to Dzuray, and plans to deploy Lean Green Teams nationwide by 2012.

“With nearly 32,000 facilities, a presence in every community, and the largest civilian fleet in the nation, we know how important our efforts are to make a positive impact on the environment,” Dzuray added. “Our employee green teams are an important part of building a conservation culture and reducing our carbon footprint.”

As part of its green efforts, the Postal Service buys sustainable materials and works to reduce the amount of consumables it buys. The agency first developed a “buy green” policy more than 12 years ago, and has a goal to reduce spending on consumables 30 percent by 2020. In 2009, its consumables spending decreased 16 percent from the previous year. Additionally, the Postal Service is working to increase the percentage of environmentally preferable products it buys by 50 percent by 2015. These are products that are bio-based, have recycled content, are eco-labeled and are energy and water efficient.

The Postal Service is the only mailing and shipping company in the world whose shipping supplies and postage products have earned Cradle to Cradle CertificationCM , meaning they are designed with materials that are safe for human health and the environment. The agency has won more than 75 environmental awards, including 40 White House Closing the Circle, 10 Environmental Protection Agency WasteWise Partner of the Year, Climate Action Champion, Direct Marketing Association Green Echo, and the Postal Technology International Environmental Achievement of the Year.

Esto es un campo con mucho futuro para el mundo y en especial para países del tercer mundo. Me refiero a la aplicación de lean en los sistemas medioambientales. Quantum TC desde el 2009 ofrece un curso llamado Lean For Green el cual ayuda a cumplir con los conceptos del EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) y precisamente el cursomfue creado a solicitud de la secretaria de medioambinete de la república Dominicana. (para que vea Alvin).

En el curso se trata primero de analizar el impacto de los 8 desperdicios de lean uno a uno sobre el medioambiente. Por ejemplo sobre producción tendrá los impactos de uso de energía eléctrica innecesaria y el riesgo de obsolescencia del producto que eventualmente habrá que buscar métodos de disposición. Esto es para citar algunos solamente. Otro ejemplo con inventario. Un impacto es el requerimiento de mas cartones para empaque del inventario de productos terminados o mas bines plásticos para del WIP. Etc. Etc.

Un segundo aspecto del curso es la identificación del flujo de recursos naturales en el mapa de flujo de valor (VSM), donde los cálculos del PCE se hacen a base de recursos naturales necesarios por especificaciones del producto y/o el proceso (valor agregado) y recursos naturales extra actualmente utilizados (valor no agregado). Estos VSM lo llamamos en el curso GVSM donde G es de Green.

También en los mapas de procesos se identifican los insumos de medioambiente,, uno de las 6M, y se codifican con dos letras mas la H de hazard (peligroso) si se trata de un material peligroso, o la ER de Environmental resource si se trata de recursos medioambientales, ademas claro de todos los otros códigos que conocen, X, N,Nh, C, S, TOC. En lean for green se lleva los H Al fmea y se toma acciones preventivas relacionadas con iso 14001. Muy interesante la acción.

Hay mucho mas como por ejemplo en SLP los diagramas from-to deben enfatizar sobre la intensidad de los recursos naturales al vez de la intensidad del producto en general. Pero no pretendo hacerles el curso vía foro. Pueden investigar mas en el internet. Creo que EPA tiene todo un toolkit de lean que publicaron al final del 2007.

Es lamentable pero nada mas dimos el curso 2 veces, a dos grupos de la secretaria. Estamos pensando integraron en nuestra oferta de acompañamiento a ña certificación de Iso 14001, dependiendo de la empresa.
